But, it hits me ever year and last year was particularly bad. These past few weeks I have been a little on edge with the sudden change of the seasons, and honestly I’ve found myself slipping in to unhelpful mindsets. Whilst talking to my dharma coach I realised that for me seasonal depression is familiar, it has become my norm and in an odd way I’ve got comfortable with it.

I told her how I see myself wanting to go and sit in that worn out arm chair, locked in a dark room, alone, and wait for my demons to take control. In that moment she challenged me to … perhaps … maybe … just maybe … not open the door to that room. She asked if I could make another room to go into, and encouraged me to imagine how I would decorate it. (With books by the way … obviously).

After the session I imagined myself as Neo in Matrix when he was presented with the blue or red pill. Do I want to stay with the familiar, slip down the same saddening spiral and sink into that old chair? Or … do I want to step away from that cycle and create a new room. Perhaps I could start to make new habits, look at things differently. Start to look at the winter season not as depressing and dark but as a time to relax and reflect?

Please, don’t get me wrong, there is no magical switch. My anxieties, my mental health issues aren’t going to disappear over night (what I would do for that coloured pill), but I can help change the narrative.

Familiar is comforting, familiar is easy, but familiar isn’t always right. I know change can be scary. It can feel daunting and perhaps unobtainable. But, unlike the Matrix where we will wake up to a chaotic world, we can go slow, focus on small changes, one achievable goal at a time. (and if we slip and fuck up, that’s okay, we simply refocus and try again … we got this !!!)

For me, I’ve said good bye to that old comfy chair, and I’ve gently pulled that door closed. I’m creating another room now, one I can make brighter, fill with things that bring me joy, like that library from Beauty and the Beast … oh god I’d do anything for that library… sorry … back to the point … better choices, yes that’s it … I am starting to make choices that will serve me, that will brighter my days, and fill my heart with warmth. Last week I accepted an invite and actually went out with some friends. I’m making and eating good, wholesome foods. I am going for walks in the autumn sun. I’m reading that book (shocker) that’s been on my TBR pile screaming at me for months. I’m starting to think that maybe, winter isn’t so bad.

I’m focusing on this moment now. And you know what some days won’t work out quite how I planned. But, one bad day doesn’t mean I have to sit in a dark room alone all winter. And neither do you.

So, I want to encourage you all to do the same. What things could you put in place to make your colder months more wholesome? Restorative? Enjoyable? What could you do to change the familiar for better ?

We are all just works in progress. And I think that is beautiful. There is no finite goal to me being complete. Each day, each month, each year I grow and expand. I learn new things and let some things go.

With every inhale we expand.

With every exhale we soften.

As always my friends,

Love and light

Betty

Leave a Reply Cancel reply

Your email address will not be published. Required fields are marked *

Comment *

Name *

Email *

Website

Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment.

A couple of weeks ago during my session with my dharma coach we talked about seasonal depression and stepping out of the familiar.
